Press releases

Intuitive machine control using speech recognition

Fraunhofer researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Oldenburg have developed a speech recognition solution for use in industrial manufacturing. The system works reliably even in noisy environments and can be flexibly adapted to the user’s needs. Employees use intuitive voice commands on the factory floor, allowing them to keep both hands free and work much more efficiently.

The correct click: Audio technology tests connectors used in automobile production

Manufacturers often rely on practical plug connections during the production of automobiles. However, time and money are wasted if an incorrectly plugged-in connection goes unnoticed. The Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Oldenburg has therefore developed a solution.

Highly efficient ammonia-based systems for climate-friendly energy supply

In the future, ammonia could play a decisive role in the transition from fossil fuels to climate-friendly alternatives — as long as it is produced from green hydrogen, for example, using renewable energy sources. Ammonia is easy to store and transport.

Lasers join lightweight sandwich structures

Modern lightweight construction has already been helping automotive and aerospace industry to save fuel and materials and to reduce environmental impact. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS have recently found a way to transfer such proven design principles to other industries. By using lasers, they weld filigree hollow chamber structures with cover sheets to form lightweight sandwich panels.

Highly sensitive robot gripper: No need for pneumatics

Force-sensitive, dynamic, energy efficient and with a range of applications – these qualities are what distinguish the new robot gripper created by the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronic Systems Design IEM. It can transport fragile objects from one production step to the next without damaging them.

Designing trustworthy and transparent AI systems using assessment tools

The hype around ChatGPT has brought the topic of artificial intelligence and its impressive potential to the fore. At the same time, ensuring the quality and maintaining control of AI systems are becoming increasingly important – especially when these systems take on responsible tasks.

Wireless industrial communication — greater safety for lone workers

People working alone are at particular risk of falling victim to workplace accidents. Therefore, it is essential that they are protected by systems that automatically detect threats such as fall hazards, potential medical emergencies or time spent in critical areas, and notify first responders or trigger warnings in appropriate areas.

Laser technology for energy-efficient production of battery cells

High-performance battery cells are a crucial prerequisite for electrifying the mobility sector. With this in mind, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen have developed innovative laser-based technologies for producing lithium-ion batteries — which, in comparison with those produced conventionally, can be charged more quickly and have a longer service lifetime.

SWAP-IT: Innovative production architecture for the factory of the future

Conventional concepts from the manufacturing industry are increasingly being pushed to their limits. This is often due to a combination of current challenges like volatile markets, supply crises and rising energy prices. Researchers at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft have developed an innovative production architecture that addresses these challenges.

When the motor sounds funny

Experienced machinists hear faults before they become acute. The Fraunhofer Institute for Large Structures in Production engineering IGP is presenting a holistic method for monitoring large engines at the Hannover Messe. Failures of main engines on large ships, for example, are primarily expensive due to spare parts, labor and delays.

Risk evaluation: Fraunhofer software takes FMEA to the next level

Autonomous vehicles in intralogistics and machine tools in industrial production are notorious for their susceptibility to faults and to failures of individual devices and components.

We add biology to Industry 4.0

»BioFusion 4.0« transfers principles from nature into industrial manufacturing to achieve sustainable and circular value creation. At this year‘s Hannover Messe from April 17 to 21, 2023, Fraunhofer IPK demonstrates how biogenic materials and digital solutions can be used to design resilient production processes and sustainable products.

Trust is good, but AI control is better

Fraunhofer IAIS is at the Hannover Messe with two showcases of Artificial Intelligence (AI): hybrid graph AI optimizes the use of materials along the value chain, assessment tools validate AI systems for possible weaknesses.

Fraunhofer IDMT from Ilmenau shows reliable system for non-contact acoustic monitoring for production

Multisensory tools for digital process monitoring

Autonomous, self-controlling production systems have tremendous potential
in the transformation towards sustainability. At the Hannover Messe 2023, the Fraunhofer IST will be presenting innovative solutions for real-time data acquisition directly in the running process.

Innovative sensor inserts enable monitoring of production processes

In order to achieve optimum product quality, precise control of the production process is necessary. For this purpose, the relevant parameters must be continuously recorded.

Sustainable process chains for the manufacture of resilient and smart tools

Whether drilling, turning or milling: In machining – as well as in primary
forming and re-forming, die casting and many other applications – tools are of pivotal importance for industrial production.
