The Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT develops audio solutions for the entertainment sector and industrial applications based on smart signal processing and custom system designs. The institute also specializes in automated, secure audio and video analysis using machine learning methods. Prof. Bös’s research has focused on technical acoustics, machine acoustics, structure-borne sound and methods to assess and influence noise generation. He will bring this focus to bear as a strategic asset in Fraunhofer IDMT’s future orientation.
“Research into audiovisual media encompasses a vast range of fields from the entertainment sector to industrial applications. Developments in this area are essential to many industries and an important basis for innovative solutions. I am delighted that we are able to welcome Prof. Bös, a highly qualified and distinguished scientist, as director of the Fraunhofer IDMT,” says Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, president of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
Prof. Bös adds, “At Fraunhofer IDMT, I can build on many years of globally recognized research in immersive audio and AI-based analysis of audiovisual content. I see great potential here to develop new industrial and mechanical engineering applications based on my past research pursuits. This applies especially to automated analysis of audio data for acoustical quality assurance and virtual development of acoustical products. I also wish to drive on with efforts to ensure the product development process takes noise emissions and acoustical properties into account from the outset. Unfortunately, this is still rarely the case in industrial practice. I look forward to contributing my experience and expertise to further strengthen the institute’s core competencies, to establish new areas of research and to develop new applications. I am counting on the close collaboration with the Technische Universität Ilmenau and on the good cooperation with the many research partners of Fraunhofer IDMT to achieve these goals.”
Joachim Bös studied mechanical engineering at TU Darmstadt and at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, USA, before working as a research assistant and PhD student in the Mechatronics and Machine Acoustics research group at TU Darmstadt. Between 2003 and 2008, he was a research scientist at the competence center Mechatronics/Adaptronics of the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF in Darmstadt, and in April 2004 he earned a PhD degree with a thesis on the topic of “Numerical shape optimization in structural acoustics” at TU Darmstadt. In 2008, he became a research assistant in the present-day System Reliability, Adaptive Structures, and Machine Acoustics SAM research group at TU Darmstadt, and in 2009 he was named deputy director of this group. Prior to his appointment at TU Ilmenau and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT, Joachim Bös was most recently the Academic Director of the SAM research group and continued to work part-time for the Fraunhofer LBF.
