Retrofittable solar energy radiation control for windows and glass facades with switchable films

The potential of the smart layers within the Switch2Save project is to be demonstrated and evaluated at this office building in Uppsala (Sweden).

Large glass façades have been in vogue since the early 20th century. Natural light makes a significant contribution to our sense of well-being indoors. One drawback is uncontrolled heat radiation. Electrochromic films, which can be switched on and off by an applied voltage and thus regulate heat radiation, can help to improve the indoor climate. The same applies to thermochromic coatings. Cost-effective retrofit solutions for innovative components such as these are being developed as part of the Switch2Save and FLEX-G 4.0 funded projects. The aim is to make it as easy as possible to integrate these into windows, thereby helping to reduce the building’s energy requirements. At BAU 2023, Fraunhofer FEP and its project partners will be showcasing switchable foils in model windows.

Future districts: digital twins for climate-neutral neighborhoods

How would our cities survive without sustainable districts to serve as engines and laboratories for the future of living and working? The Fraunhofer IAO exhibit is a product of the research work carried out as part of the “Morgenstadt: Future District Alliance” – a unique innovation alliance between the Fraunhofer Morgenstadt initiative and 20 partners from the real estate industry, cities, national subsidiaries and start-ups. One of the main areas of research is the development of digital twins as a process toolkit covering the entire life cycle from potential analyses and planning to construction and operation. The exhibit visualizes various information models from specific district and campus developments, such as the energy infrastructure at the Fraunhofer Institute Center Stuttgart and the “Werksviertel” in Munich.

Innovative and energy-efficient facade renovation: Modular facade with integrated systems technology supplies buildings with renewable energy

The rate of renovation in the building sector is still too low to achieve the energy transition by the target date set by the German federal government. However, increased use of prefabricated components can help accelerate this process. Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP, together with colleagues from the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology IEE, have developed a renewable energy module facade, which supplies the building with environmentally friendly electricity, thereby heating, cooling and ventilating the rooms. In addition to being suitable for the renovation of existing facades, the system can also be used as a sustainable, energy-efficient solution in new builds. The aim is to develop a cost-effective, modular renovation and new-build façade, where the renovation work is minimally invasive.

Switchable phase change materials

How the switchable heat storage module works: Targeted activation of the supercooled phase change material (left) makes it possible to release the heat which has been stored in the material over a long period of time with virtually no loss.

Storing surplus heat and using it at a later time with virtually no loss: Researchers at Fraunhofer ICT have applied the phenomenon of pocket warmer pillows for cold winter days to climate control and air conditioning for large structures and buildings in order to make them more efficient and resilient. Suitable materials and material systems are being developed by the Energy Efficient Storage Systems working group as part of the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Programmable Materials CPM. There is huge potential here, especially when it comes to modern heating systems, for example heat pumps combined with area heating systems with a low flow temperature. Thermal insulation for the summer months can also be significantly improved through the use of these materials and systems.

Augmented reality and building information management

In construction and facility management, 3D as-built information could be made available anytime, anywhere in future with the help of 3D models and imaging systems. The success of BIM (Building Information Model), which facilitates the generation, management and permanent documentation of building data from planning right through to maintenance, is contributing to this. Smartphone platforms provide access to centrally stored digital twin models that show the status of planned and completed tasks. In this regard, Fraunhofer IGD is focusing on cloud-based AR services for BIM models and support for assembly and disassembly tasks by means of augmented reality technologies. The aim is to develop AR solutions using the latest model-based 3D registration technologies.

Marker-free tracking: minimizing sources of error in construction, preventing product counterfeiting

Did the component really come from the chosen manufacturer? Or has a low-cost alternative component been supplied instead? Thanks to Track & Trace Fingerprint technology, this can be checked easily on the construction site using a smartphone.

Industrially prefabricated elements such as windows can be tracked seamlessly using the Track & Trace Fingerprint process without the need for separate markers. The technology utilizes the surface of the components for identification purposes: A defined area is imaged with a camera system in high resolution and a code is then generated from the image and assigned to an ID. This pairing is stored in a database and assigned planning data for the installation. Even very small components that are impossible to mark, or components with functional surfaces, can be tracked in this way for the first time. At the construction site, the element is photographed using a smartphone and cross-checked with the database. This means that all of the important installation instructions can be accessed on site.

Colored solar modules for integration into building facades

Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE

A total of 60 photovoltaic modules with a MorphoColor® structural layer adorn the façade of the Center for Highly Efficient Solar Cells at Fraunhofer ISE. The pilot project for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) supplies approximately 11 megawatt hours of solar power per year. MorphoColor® technology makes it possible to add color to solar module panes while maintaining at least 90% of module efficiency. In this way, the integrated photovoltaic system can be an eye-catching feature of the façade architecture or blend visually into the building envelope. Visitors to the BAU trade show will be able to check out a green and a blue PV module with MorphoColor® technology at the Fraunhofer booth.

Vertical Water Sponge

Das Konzept »Vertical Water Sponge« ist eine Maßnahme gegen Starkregenereignisse, Hochwasser oder Hitzewellen.

Heavy rain, flooding and heat waves – the climate change challenges faced by cities can be countered with the “Vertical Water Sponge” water retention system, a vertical retention system consisting of a load-bearing permeable outer shell with a water-storing core. To build this, mineral materials from recycling processes are used, which have very good water storage and conduction properties. The modules are connected to the roof drainage system. This allows large volumes of rainwater to be stored temporarily and in turn used for evaporative cooling, which is made possible by the high volume-specific surface area of the module core. The intention is to make these vertical retention modules suitable for use in both existing buildings and new construction projects.
