As part of a collaboration between Fraunhofer-Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI), Humboldt University of Berlin (HU) and the Ferdinand Braun Institute (FBH), a team of researchers has developed a new magnetic field camera. Julian Bopp, Felipe Perona and Tim Schröder (HU, FBH) designed the overall concept together with Hauke Conradi and Moritz Kleinert (Fraunhofer HHI). For his work on this project, Julian Bopp has now been awarded the first prize at "Forum Junge Spitzenforschung". The award is presented by the Industrial Research Foundation and the Berlin universities and is endowed with 10,000 euros for research funding.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT has revolutionized the production process of the high-performance insulation material aerogel. For this, the researchers received the first Innovation Award of the European Association for Research and Technology Organization EARTO in the “Impact Expected” category in Brussels on October 11, 2023 . The non-profit association awards the prize to products and services with high social or economic benefits for the EU.

At this year's annual meeting of the Society for Operations Research (GOR) on August 30, 2023, Prof. Dr. Anita Schöbel received the GOR Science Award. The award is the most important prize awarded by the society and recognizes a scientist every two years for exceptional achievements in developing the focus of »Operations Research«. Schöbel is director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM and professor at the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University Kaiserslautern-Landau RPTU.

New technologies such as augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing are rapidly opening up opportunities for entirely new business models and the future of work in industry. However, internet-based services also bring additional challenges in terms of data security and user acceptance. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding various interdisciplinary projects. At the closing conference, the joint project "secureAR" won the Technology Award with its open, cloud-based service platform and a new AR assistance system equipped with OLED microdisplays from Fraunhofer FEP.

The Carl-Zeiss-Humboldt Research Award 2023 goes to quantum optician Svenja Knappe from the University of Colorado at Boulder, USA. She is currently conducting research at Fraunhofer IPM as a guest scientist. Since 2022, the Humboldt Foundation is presenting an annual award to an internationally recognized scientific personality from abroad. The award is funded by the Carl Zeiss Foundation.

In the "project of the century" ideas competition by the Werner Siemens Foundation (WSS), the ChemSysCon project team was awarded one million Swiss francs (1.017 million euros). The aim of the funding is to develop and establish novel technologies for sustainable resource use. In the ChemSysCon project, scientists from Freie Universität Berlin, the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP are developing new chemical systems for the conversion of sustainable resources. At the Fraunhofer IAP, lignin - a by-product from the pulp industry - is being converted so that it can be used as a material.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Bett, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and professor of physics at the University of Freiburg, and Dr. Frank Dimroth, department head of III-V and Concentrator Photovoltaics at Fraunhofer ISE receive the research award of the Werner Siemens Foundation (WSS), endowed with one million Swiss francs. The award is based on their scientific work with III-V semiconductor compounds in the field of highly efficient photovoltaics. They, together with five other teams, are finalists in the competition for the foundation's "Project of the Century".

The electronics industry is one of the most innovative. That is why the readers of the journal Elektronik and the online platform elektroniknet.de had no less than 111 innovative products to choose from, from which they could select the finalists in ten categories as their favorites. The researchers at Fraunhofer FEP were pleased to be among the finalists. In the category "Optoelectronics and Displays", the new ultra-low power OLED microdisplay entered the race and won first place.
